What UK Anglers Need to Know Before Booking
Exclusive Carp Fishing Holidays in France
If you're planning a carp fishing trip to France with your mates, this is everything you need to know before you book. From choosing the right type of lake to understanding how the fishing changes through the seasons — getting it right makes the difference between a steady, enjoyable week and one that never quite gets going.
What Is an Exclusive Carp Fishing Holiday?
We've been running Juvanzé Lakes since 2007, and most of our weeks are booked by returning groups. This guide is based on what actually works — and what tends to catch people out on their first trip.
An exclusive carp fishing holiday means hiring an entire lake or complex for your group only. There are no day-ticket anglers and no outside pressure. Everyone in your group fishes together, shares the same facilities, and enjoys complete privacy for the duration of the stay.
For many anglers, this format removes the stress that comes with public venues and creates a far more relaxed and enjoyable experience.
Is Exclusive Lake Hire Right For You?
Small exclusive lakes offer maximum privacy, the freedom to manage your own baiting and swim choices, and a social atmosphere that larger venues can't match. If you value quality fish stocks, familiar company, and fishing at your own pace, an exclusive trip is usually the best fit.
✓ Perfect for
- ✓ Groups of friends fishing together
- ✓ Mixed-ability groups
- ✓ Families who want privacy and security
- ✓ Social anglers who value comfort
- ✓ Experienced anglers targeting bigger fish
- ✓ France first-timers
May not suit
- – Solo anglers who enjoy the buzz of busy venues
- – The "pioneer" who prefers wild, unmanaged waters
- – Those who prefer the mystery of unknown venues
Choosing the Right Lake for Your Group
One of the biggest mistakes groups make is choosing a lake that doesn't suit how they actually want to fish.
Some lakes are set up for social fishing, where you can stay connected as a group and still fish effectively. Others are more suited to anglers who prefer to spread out and focus purely on their own water.
It's also worth thinking about what you want from the week. Some lakes offer more consistent action, while others hold a smaller number of bigger fish and require a bit more patience and watercraft.
Neither is right or wrong — but getting that choice wrong for your group is where trips can fall flat.
Exclusive vs Other Carp Fishing Options in France
UK anglers visiting France generally have three main options. Here's how they compare:
| Factor | Exclusive Lake | Shared Private Lake | Public Venue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Access to venue | ✓ Your group only | ✗ Shared with others | ✗ Open to anyone |
| Swim choice | ✓ You choose on arrival | — Draw or pre-booked | — First come, first served |
| Moving swims | — The group decides | ✗ Not usually permitted | ✓ More freedom |
| Social atmosphere | ✓ Your group, your pace | — Mixed with strangers | ✗ Strangers on the bank |
| Night fishing | ✓ Standard | ✓ Usually permitted | — Often restricted |
| On-site facilities | ✓ Dedicated to your group | ✗ Shared with other groups | ✗ Shared with all |
| Security | ✓ Secure, private site | — Variable | ✗ Risk of theft |
| Cost per person | — Mid-range with a full group | — Mid-range | ✓ Lower per person |
| Best for | Social groups, families, first-timers | Small groups, solo anglers | Those who prefer wild fishing |

Facilities & Catering: Fishing on Your Terms
At Juvanzé, each lake has its own private kitchen, covered eating area, hot showers, UK TV, and free WiFi — all dedicated to your group.
We advocate for self-catering over rigid food packages. Fixed mealtimes force you to reel in during prime bite times. By self-catering, you eat what you want, when you want — so you'll never have to reel in just as it's looking good for a take.
Bait and Bait Boats: One Less Thing to Worry About
First-timers often ask what bait to bring. Our advice? Use what the fish know. The lakes are regularly fed with our Juvanzé Special boilies — a savoury fishmeal or sweet nut blend that the fish see week in, week out.
Ordering from us saves you the hassle of keeping bait fresh on the journey or guessing quantities. And if you've never used a bait boat, you don't need to buy one for a single trip — we have reliable boats for hire so you can try the tactic with zero commitment. Just order at least two weeks before your holiday.
Carp Stock, Realistic Expectations & Enjoyment
One of the biggest advantages of exclusive carp fishing in France is stock quality. What exclusive access provides is a calm environment to fish properly and adapt without interference. For many groups, the enjoyment comes from the overall experience as much as the captures.

What to Expect From the Week
Most groups come out expecting non-stop action, but the reality is usually more balanced than that.
In recent seasons, the groups who do best are the ones who stay active — watching the water, reacting to showing fish, and making small adjustments through the week.
That doesn't mean it's hard fishing, but it does mean the anglers who treat it like a proper week's fishing tend to get more from it than those who just sit behind the rods.
Common Mistakes on French Carp Trips
Most issues on French trips don't come down to luck — they usually come down to preparation or expectations. Common ones we see are:
- — Booking a lake that doesn't suit the group
- — Turning up too late and losing a day of fishing
- — Not being prepared to adapt once you're on the bank
None of these are complicated to avoid, but they make a big difference over the course of a week.
Best Times of Year for Exclusive Carp Fishing
French carp fishing is productive across a longer calendar than many anglers assume. Understanding what each season offers helps you match your expectations — and can open up availability in quieter months.
March

Safety & Security
Tackle theft and vehicle vandalism are genuine risks on public fishing venues in France. Cars broken into, gear stolen from swims while you're asleep — it happens often enough that many experienced anglers have a story.
At Juvanzé, the only people on site are Juvanzé Lakes groups and us. The car park is secure and close to the lake. There are no strangers walking through. You're not watching over your shoulder or worrying about whether your van will still be there in the morning.
Also consider travel insurance
When you book an exclusive lake holiday, you're typically paying a non-refundable deposit with the balance due weeks before travel. Travel insurance protects you against cancellation costs if illness, injury, or a family emergency prevents you from going.
Every year, anglers lose deposits because they didn't insure. Don't be one of them.
Location, Travel & The "Friday Strategy"
Juvanzé Lakes is located in the Champagne-Ardenne region — a straightforward 255-mile run from Calais via the A26, approximately 3 hours 45 minutes drive.
The Eurotunnel (35 minutes) and the Dover to Calais ferries (90 minutes) are the most direct routes. Instead of driving through the night, we always suggest travelling down on the Friday. Staying in a local hotel allows you to wake up fresh, grab something from a local bakery, and arrive at the lake for the 1pm Saturday start ready to fish — rather than spending your first 24 hours catching up on sleep.
